Brown trout can be found in nearly every river and stream in the region, and there are a number of lakes, large and small which have good populations of this species. We also have rivers in which rainbow trout proliferate, something of a rarity in Tasmania!
The best known fisheries can be found east of Bridport, at Blackmans Lagoon, Little Waterhouse Lake and Big Waterhouse Lake. These are regularly stocked with both brown and rainbow trout. Blackmans Lagoon is the most popular and productive of these waters, with large brown trout caught here each season.
Throughout the region there are many small dams, with a large number of these built to service the mining industry of the last century. These usually hold good numbers of brown trout, and offer good fishing whether you are spinning, bait fishing or fly fishing.
Small creeks provide a great challenge in a beautiful environment. The Weld River, near Weldborough, is exclusively populated by rainbow trout and a unique fishing experience in Tasmania.
While elsewhere in Tasmania people are tucking up by the fire and going into winter hibernation, North East Tasmania comes alive to celebrate and showcase local arts and crafts annually on the June long weekend.
